About our Luxury Dog Coats

This distinct fabric is made from woven cotton and worn by the Masai as their traditional dress, called the ‘shuka’.

Origins of shuka cloth is a much-debated topic.  One school of thought claims it is the combined result of cloth traded during the slave trade and the imported dyes from Madagascar during the 18th century.

Another is that the patterns were originally used to design the mud cloths and leather garments the Masai wore before fabric was readily available.  They also explain that these patterns and dyes were applied as decoration to their bodies, as well as their hut walls, during particular ceremonies such as weddings and naming ceremonies.

A further idea claims that the cloth patterns were introduced by Scottish missionaries during the colonial era of the 19th and early 20th centuries.  Either way, the patterns and colours produce fabulous fabric designs that are now clearly associated with the Masai culture of East Africa.

Every dog coat is made from this traditional shuka fabric and is lined with warm fleece to keep your dog snug during chilly weather.
